Another Superlap veteran, Southern Motor Works, is returning to the World Time Attack with a much more refined and considerably faster weapon and their eye on the Open Class title.
After taking the outright Open Class win at the 2009 Superlap at Oran Park, Jason and the Southern Motor Works team were expecting big things at the 2010 World Time Attack. Sadly a problem with the VVTi on the 2ZZ Toyota engine put them out of the running so for for 2011 a lot of development went into the car resulting in what the SMW believe is a very reliable and competitive package.
The engine now uses a much larger GT30 frame turbo to replace the GT28/60 which, long with several other undisclosed changes has seen the power skyrocket from 220rwkw on 14psi to almost 300rwkw! This sort of power, in a car weighing well under 1000kg, is enough to make them an extremely potent competitor.
The new combination makes the power effortlessly and on much less boost than previously, keeping the intake charge temperatures low and making the whole package more manageable. The gearbox hasn’t been overlooked with trick close ratios and the suspension has been upgraded to Nitron GT3 spec.

The magic formula for many race cars is the “power-to-weight ratio” and this car seems to eptomize this philosophy. With loads of power, this sleek and lightweight Lotus is bound to do some very fast lap times, particularly when the driver is Mr Time Attack himself – John Boston!
Having sampled the spoils of Superlap victory in 2009, the SMW team have developed a taste for it and are deadly serious about the top step of the podium in 2011.
At the World Time Attack the Southern Motor works Lotus will be supported by:
Gordon McDonald Electrical, Southern Engine Reconditioning ,Rambor Underground Mining Equipment, Wollongong Auto Suppliers, Wollongong Car Carriers, Cammthane Plastic Materials, Prestige Wholesale Cars Sydney, Frankies Auto Electrics, Process West, Trackschool, Karate School Albion Park and Mainline Dynolog Chassis Dynamometers.
