Triple Pro Class Champion Garth Walden has confirmed entry into the Link ECU Open Class with the lightning fast Mitsubishi of 666 Racing NZ supported by Royal Purple Oils.
This team took a clean sweep winning all five rounds of the New Zealand Superlap series with a variety of top level drivers including Simon Evans, Tony Satherly and Walden but with Waldens experience at Sydney Motorsport Park he was the obvious choice for WTAC. This same vehicle has competed at WTAC in previous years in the Pro Class but Walden was quick to point out how much the dynamics have changed.
“For us to bring this car back to Open Class spec was quite simple it was just a matter of trimming the aero and lowering the wing and we should be right on the money.” said Walden “I have driven to many victories with this car in New Zealand and it is a seriously fast car. Having won the big one three times previously I would not even bother entering unless I though we could win and it would be nice to take the Open Class trophy for the boys to take back to New Zealand with them. The car is already in Australia and should be at the GWR workshop in the next couple of days where we will finalize the race prep and hopefully get a couple of practice days in. The boys are hungry for the win and I will be all over it.”
The 666 Racing Evo certainly packs a serious list of components with the 2.2 litre engine packing a 680kw @ the wheels punch at 40psi from a Borg Warner 9180 turbo “We will wind it back and turn it up as we need to” said team principle Scott Kreyll. “We want to be there for the shootout and that is when we turn it up to eleven with max power”
The package is well sorted with many years of development running MCA coilovers and full Kiwi Racefab suspension. The trans is a sequential 5 speed Samsonas and the aero is all by Andrew Brilliant and constructed by Lightning Composites.
“The whole time attack deal has been very successful for our brand” said Royal Purple Managing Director Eian Jones “And in particular we have supported Garth Walden since 2012 and taking multiple Pro Class victories delivered a very powerful message about our product. So when the chance for him to drive in NZ arose we jumped in behind it. We see New Zealand as a big opportunity for us as an emerging market so if we can get the Royal Purple backed Kiwi car to take the win at the biggest international event it will present a perfect launch into that market for us.”
