World Time Attack Challenge – Day 2

ARL39002

Engines were blown and body kits literally torn from cars, as the World Time Attack competitors pushed themselves and their machines to the limit. With Mark Skaife’s 1999 V8 Supercar lap record demolished by a full second, the CyberEvo car came back from a blown head to take the lead. “Tarzan” Yamada drove the car hard till the very last lap, where after turning hard into Turn 1, the downforce on the rear wing caused it to physically tear off the car. The Cyber Evo’s best lap was an insanely quick 1:30.5870.

Right behind the CyberEvo was Sierra Sierra with their incredible EVO 8. Saturday was really a head-to-head battle between the two Mitsubishis, both bettering even the most optimistic of lap time predictions. David Empringham pushing hard for the win, doing lap after lap whilst the Japaneese teams pitted early, trying to shave those seconds off.

In third place, flanking Sierra Sierra on both sides was “Tarzan” Yamada again, this time in the Tomei/Cusco Subaru. A very consistent car with a fearsome sound under throttle, there was only  0.017 of a second between 2nd and 3rd place.

An action-filled two days, both on and off the track ensured no spectator went home unsatisfied.

How can i get a high res picture of pic 19 from day 2 as i am in the picture close to Tarzan.

  3. superlap says:

The v8 supercars times are a good yardstick to show just how quick both CyberEvo and Sierra Sierra really are.
First time on the track for both of those drivers too. I tip my hat to both!

The time posted by us, is the one listed on the Eastern Creek Website, which is why we have it listed as the record. You have to also remember that all World Time Attack competitors are running on R Spec tyre’s not full slicks. The winners of the event are confident the car could have done a 1:29, if you were to put some slicks on the car the same as the V8SCs run it would be another 1.5-2.5 seconds a lap faster again. Also please remember that Tarzan has done less than 50 Laps at Eastern Creek.

  5. Thanks Superlap! says:

Not sure if you guys are aware, but the actual V8 Supercar lap record at Eastern Creek is 1.30.8955 set on 28-04-2001 by Marcos Ambrose in his AU. Mark Skaife set his time during the race itself, but it is not the track record. In this case, there is barely three tenths of a second in it between the V8SC record and the Superlap winners time, as opposed to the 1 second ‘demolishing’ stated in the article above.

Still, a fair effort by the Superlap winner. I would be interested to see how they go over the kinds of distances the V8SC do in terms of engine/car longevity.

Thanks to the organisers, hopefully this will be televised at some point for those that couldn’t make it.
